Getting Your Houseplant Ready for Spring

As I complete my daily commute I am becoming increasingly aware of banks of golden daffodils  lining the countryside. Yesterday I saw my first lamb of the new year, a sure sign things are changing. Spring is around the corner and with it comes another growing season with all its hopes and dreams, As the days grow longer and temperatures begin to rise, your houseplants will soon wake from their winter rest. Spring is the perfect time to give them a fresh start and set them up for a season of healthy growth. Whether you have a solitary pot or an indoor jungle  now is the time to get them ready for the brighter months ahead:

1. Assess and Clean

  • Inspect each plant: Check for signs of pests, disease, or damage. Remove any dead or yellowing leaves.

  • Clean the leaves: Dust can block sunlight. Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth or give your plants a lukewarm shower.

2. Repot if Needed

  • Check for root-bound plants: If roots are circling the pot or poking out of drainage holes, it’s time to repot.

  • Choose the right pot: Go up just 1–2 inches in diameter and always use a pot with drainage holes.

  • Refresh the soil: Use a high-quality potting mix suited to your plant’s needs.

3. Resume Feeding

  • Start fertilising: As growth resumes, begin feeding with a balanced, diluted houseplant fertiliser every 2–4 weeks.

  • Pause in winter: Remember, most plants don’t need feeding during the colder months.

4. Increase Watering Gradually

  • Adjust your routine: As plants start growing, they’ll need more water. Check soil moisture regularly and water when the top inch feels dry.

  • Avoid overwatering: Let the soil dry out between waterings to prevent root rot.

5. Move Plants for More Light

  • Maximise sunlight: Move plants closer to windows or brighter spots as the sun gets stronger.

  • Rotate regularly: Turn pots every week so all sides get even light.

6. Prune and Shape

  • Trim leggy growth: Prune back any straggly stems to encourage bushier growth.

  • Pinch tips: For some plants, pinching the tips can promote branching.

7. Watch for Pests

  • Stay vigilant: Warmer weather can bring pests like aphids and spider mites. Inspect regularly and treat promptly if needed.

Final Thought

A little springtime attention will help your houseplants burst into healthy, vibrant growth. With fresh soil, more light, and a gentle boost of nutrients, your indoor garden will thrive all season long
